Our glass orbs are designed and made in Finland.
Blown especially for us by Lasi-Kostamo, a traditional glassblower family's manufacture near Turku, Finland.
Available in different shapes and sizes.
All of them are quality-made and unique pieces.
A glass orb can be an ideal home for air plants as it keeps humidity inside.
Tillandsia air plants are easy-care and exciting and they grow without soil! They absorb nutrients through the leaves and they need watering by misting or soaking, usually 2-3 times a month. This genus includes more than 700 species and these plants are native to South-America.
We offer both rare and popular species. In 2016 we have established our micro-greenhouse where we raise air plants day by day.
The godfather of Tillandsia plants was professor Elias Tillandz, a Swedish-Finnish botanist of the 17th Century in Turku. According to legend, Tillandz changed his name from Tillander to Tillandz when, as a student, he traveled by boat from Turku to Stockholm.
On the way, he became so seasick that he returned by walking around the Gulf of Bothnia, a distance of some 1000 kilometers. Later in the same century, Carl von Linné, another biologist give the name 'Tillandsia' for air plants after Elias Tillandz, because these plants don't require as much water.
The decoration materials we use as side elements in our products are picked carefully and ethically from the Nordic nature.
Pinecone, moss, lichen, tree bark, tree branch, and pine needles from the forests, stones, sand and seashells from the shores of the Baltic Sea - just to name a few.
We are using only natural ingredients.
BEHIND THE BUSINESS
ESZTER, DESIGNER AND OWNER
I established TillaPallo a few months later after I moved to Finland from Hungary in the summer of 2015. I have a strong connection with home decoration and with plants: I like design items and organic materials conceptualized as interior decoration and I am in love with the Nordic minimalism and with nature - these passions appear also in my products.
I believe that handmade air plant terrariums are a good fit to contemporary Nordic design while being a curiosity for plant lovers. The idea of air plant terrariums is coming from California; however, TillaPallo has a specific approach: to use sustainable, good quality and locally sourced materials, like handblown glass orbs from a local glassblower or organic decoration materials, which are picked ethically from the Nordic nature. Moreover, I prefer to use eco-friendly packaging ordered from Finnish companies.
Each product has a concept. We design different shaped and sized glass orbs for the ground of the air plant terrariums. During the crafting process, I select and air plant species for the glass orb, then I add side components like stones or moss.
My latest product TERRAFÅRM portrays well the meaning of TillaPallo: as a home decoration item, it has a continual connection with our habitat. One can be dependent on the other: a synergy of the aesthetic beauty and the care that the plant receives.
My goal with TillaPallo products is to bring more joy to people’s everyday life in their living spaces. I also would like to invite folks to let their imagination play: assembling an air plant terrarium is a creative and interesting thing to do.
